Artist Statement 2021

JOANNA MYLES b. 1978

Joanna Myles’ work explores human relationships with the objects we gather and keep in our homes and the landscapes we live in. She explores these through a variety of mediums, more recently leaning towards paintings on canvas as well as inks and lino prints on paper. Joanna often works on two pieces of art at a time, each influencing the other in colour and mark-making.

Drawing and observation of social interactions are key to her practice as an artist. This often starts as a casual sketch and eventually finds itself as pencil finishing.

Glyndebourne Tour ART

Forces of Nature: our theme for 2021

The theme for this year’s Glyndebourne competition was ‘Forces of Nature’. We were looking for artworks that celebrate, represent and question our insoluble relationship to nature, either taking opera as the inspiration or interpreting the theme through ideas of cultivated gardens and celebrated landscape views or wild, complicated natural phenomena and threatened environments.

VISUAL ARTS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AN INTEGRAL PART OF GLYNDEBOURNE, ON AND OFF THE STAGE, AND THE ANNUAL TOUR ART COMPETITION, WHICH HAS BEEN RUNNING SINCE 2013, OFFERS A PLATFORM FOR NEW ARTISTS TO RAISE THEIR PROFILE. 2021’S TOUR ART COMPETITION CHALLENGES NEW ARTISTS TO SUBMIT AN ARTWORK BASED ON THE THEME OF ‘FORCES OF NATURE’.

Glyndebourne curator Nerissa Taysom said of this year’s entries: ‘This year we have received an extraordinary response to the Tour Art Competition, with entries from 18 different countries. The standard has been exceptionally high and we’ve seen a diverse range of techniques, from painting and printmaking to sculpture, photography and digital art. The Tour Art Competition continues to uncover new and emerging talent and we are excited to be showcasing global perspectives on the theme of nature.

Celebrate Cuckmere Haven 2021

The Celebrate Cuckmere Open is the first Sussex open of its kind. In our 1st year, I am bringing together the best of art depicting views of, from, or around iconic Cuckmere Haven. We want to see the broadest range of work submitted.

At a time when representational and figurative painting is enjoying a welcome return to popularity and as society re-emerges into the light after the global pandemic, this exhibition will lift the spirits and give ArtWave visitors an opportunity to appreciate and buy new works in a wide range of mediums.

The exhibition is to be held in the beautifully iconic South Hill Barn on Seaford Head, transforming the location for two weeks of creative inspiration and education.

Funds raised by the open call exhibition will go directly to Cuckmere Haven SOS, a registered charity that has been set up to pay for a long-lasting defense solution.

For a tiny bay on the Sussex coastline, Cuckmere Haven enjoys something of a global superstar status. Having been used for numerous major motion films, TV shows, and commercials. Every year over 400,000 people from across the globe visit Cuckmere Haven to see for themselves the white cliffs & picturesque coastguard cottages they recognise from TV & cinema screens.

All works will be for sale online and at the venue
